Blantyre Community Council provides a local voice for people across Blantyre and all of the town’s neighbourhoods. We are independent of South Lanarkshire Council. Our community is not defined by the Ward 15 electoral boundary.
Our purpose
We listen to local people, raise issues with public bodies, respond to consultations and help share reliable information about matters affecting Blantyre. We want participation to be open, inclusive and respectful.

What is a Community Council?
Community councils were introduced through the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. They give local people a voice in decisions that affect their area. They are run by volunteers who work together to raise concerns, organise activities and speak up for the community.
In South Lanarkshire, community councils commonly share residents’ views on planning and licensing applications, raise concerns with public services, organise local activity and support projects that improve the area. Each council chooses its priorities from the needs of its community.
Community councillors are elected as individuals for four-year terms and do not represent political parties. The Chairperson also serves a four-year term. The Secretary, Treasurer and Vice-Chairperson step down at each Annual General Meeting and may stand again.
MPs, MSPs and South Lanarkshire Councillors who represent the area are automatic members, but do not have voting rights on the Community Council.

You do not need to be a Community Council member to attend a public meeting or contact us. We ask everyone taking part to treat others with courtesy and respect.
