Blantyre Community Council wants everyone to be able to use this website, regardless of technology, ability or circumstance.
Our standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2, Level AA. This is the recognised standard referenced by UK guidance for accessible public-sector websites.
What we have done
- Reviewed published pages across the site for page titles, main landmarks, heading structure, image alternative-text attributes and labelled form controls;
- Corrected the homepage hero image and meeting-minutes panel colour contrast (tested to 4.5:1 on white backgrounds);
- Extended keyboard focus styling across the site, with clear focus rings on links and buttons;
- Enlarged form submit buttons to minimum 44×44 CSS pixels across the site;
- Tested navigation, heading hierarchy and skiplinks on keyboard navigation;
- Embedded Jetpack contact form for event submissions with full field labels, required-field markers, and consistent form validation messaging (September 2026);
- Added visual indicators to all external links, including “(opens in new window)” text on Google Maps links, Facebook links, and external news sources;
- Improved image alt text: decorative images marked with empty alt=””, and hero images given brief contextual descriptions;
- Applied consistent semantic HTML structure with h2 and h3 headings, proper list markup, and navigation landmarks with anchor IDs;
- Configured all external-link buttons with target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer” for safe new-window opening.
Current limitations
This review does not establish full WCAG conformance. Screen-reader testing, mobile and 400% zoom testing, complete form error and confirmation journeys, and the accessibility of downloadable meeting documents remain to be assessed. Some personal-information fields do not yet provide browser autocomplete hints. External websites are outside our control. Please contact us for an accessible alternative to any information you cannot use.
