Need urgent or crisis help?

Utility emergencies and extra support
If there is immediate danger, call 999. For a gas leak or suspected carbon-monoxide emergency, leave the area if it is safe and call the gas emergency service. Do not use a naked flame or electrical switches.
- Gas emergency, including a gas smell: 0800 111 999 — free, 24 hours a day.
- Power cut or damaged electricity network: 105 — free, 24 hours a day. In central and southern Scotland, SP Energy Networks can also be reached on 0800 092 9290.
- Water or wastewater emergency: Scottish Water, 0800 0778 778 — free, 24 hours a day.
Priority Services Registers
A Priority Services Register is a free, confidential record held by a utility company so it can offer extra help if a supply is interrupted or when it needs to contact you. It can help people who are older, disabled, have a long-term health condition, use essential medical equipment, have sight, hearing, communication or mental-health needs, are pregnant, have young children, or need temporary support after illness, bereavement or a change in circumstances.
Support varies by company. It can include accessible information, a password scheme for doorstep visits, advance notice of planned interruptions where possible, outage updates, and help arranging water or reconnecting gas where appropriate. Registration does not guarantee a quicker repair or that supply will not be interrupted.
Register with each service you use:
- SP Energy Networks Priority Services Register for the electricity network, or call 0330 10 10 167.
- Scottish Water Priority Services Register, or call 0800 0778 778. Scottish Water says this service is free and confidential.
- Ask your gas and electricity suppliers to add you to their Priority Services Registers. If you have different suppliers, contact both; when you switch supplier, ask the new supplier to register you too.
Tell each provider about the help you need and update it if your circumstances change. If you rely on electrically powered medical equipment, make an emergency back-up plan with your care team or equipment provider.
Contacts and registration routes checked 18 September 2026. See SP Energy Networks, Scottish Water additional support and Ofgem’s guidance for current details.

E-scooters: the rules and useful guidance
If you own an e-scooter, are considering buying one, or have questions about their use locally, these official sources explain the position.
Privately owned e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles. They cannot normally be used legally on public roads, pavements or cycle lanes. They can be used on private land that is not accessible to the public, with the landowner’s permission. Approved rental trials have separate rules; they do not make privately owned scooters legal on public roads.
Read the government’s guidance and legal explanation. This also explains the distinction from electrically assisted pedal cycles and the possible penalties for unlawful use.
For a non-emergency concern, contact Police Scotland on 101. Call 999 if someone is in immediate danger. Information checked 17 September 2026; follow the official guidance for changes.
